Baptism If you are interested in arranging for a baby or child to be baptised in a Withernsea Benefice church please contact Rev Martin at the Vicarage on 01964 615060. What a baptism is for... Baptism is the way that someone (adult or child) becomes a member of the Church. In the case of babies or children, the ceremony involves the parents and godparents making promises that they will pray for the child, give them a good example of Christian living, and help them take their place as worshipping members of the church. This is a serious commitment, and may not suit all parents, and we are always happy to offer, as an alternative, a simple service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. Please contact Rev Martin for more details. Having your child baptised If you are clear that you do wish to have your child baptised then we will set a date to visit you at home where the vicar or a member of our baptism team will go through the service with you and answer any questions you may have, so that you feel at home in this new community which you and your child are joining, and can relax and enjoy the baptism service. Baptisms in the Withernsea Benefice are usually held either on a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon. A word about godparents… When you book your child's baptism, we will take details of the Godparents, it is usual for there to be no more than four. Please remember that Godparents must be over 16 years old, and usually baptised.
Weddings Getting Married... Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting things a couple can do, and we are delighted to help as much as we can. If you are interested in getting married at a Withernsea Benefice church, the best thing to do is to contact Rev Martin at the Vicarage on 01964 615060. Who can get married at our Church There are some legal restrictions on who can get married in churches. Firstly, you and your partner must be 18 years of age, or between the ages of 16 and 18 and with your parents permission to marry.  To be married in the church of your choosing, you need a 'qualifying connection.' You have such a connection if you or your partner:- live in the parish; have ever resided for at least six months in the parish; have or had a parent who ever resided for at least six months in the parish during your lifetime; have ever habitually attended worship at the Parish Church for at least six months; have or had a parent who ever habitually attended worship in the parish for at least six months during your lifetime; were baptised at the Parish Church; were prepared for Confirmation by the Parish Church even if that Confirmation service took place in a different parish; have or had a parent or grandparent who were married in the parish. Previously divorced? This church welcomes everyone, including those who have been through the pain of a broken relationship. The Bishops issue basic guidelines on the remarriage in church of people who have been divorced. So if this is you, and you would like to consider marrying again in a Withernsea Benefice church, please contact the Vicar in the first instance. Arranging your wedding at Withernsea Benefice church When you book your wedding day, we will ask you for some information which will eventually form part of the marriage registers. The officiating priest will make arrangements to try and prepare you both for the big day, and talk through this big step you are taking by getting married. As the date for the wedding draws closer the priest will prepare for the banns to be read and talk through the details of the service such as the music, hymns and readings etc. We will then put your choices together into an order of service which we can send to you by e-mail, so you can arrange for it to be printed in a typeface and presentation of your choice. Rehearsals Finally, there will be a rehearsal a day or so before your wedding day, involving the Couple, the Best Man, whoever is giving the Bride away, and at least one of the bridesmaids, or as many as can make it. Mums and Dads often like to come too! And then comes the day itself!
Funerals When someone dies... In this parish we are privileged to be invited to share in the sad as well as the happy times. Losing a loved one through death is never an easy experience. Every life, including our own, is precious to God. Christians have always believed that there is hope in death as in life, and that there is new life in Christ over death. Even those who share such faith find that there is a real sense of loss and sadness at the death of a loved one. We will each have had our own experiences of their life and death, with different memories and different feelings. We're here when you need us... If you would like a funeral of your loved one in a Withernsea Benefice church please talk to your funeral director or contact the vicar Rev Martin at the Vicarage on 01964 615060.
